Tiny lettering has become the modern first tattoo: discreet, personal and done in under an hour. A single word on the inner wrist, a roman numeral date on a finger, initials tucked behind the ear — small tattoos suit people who want meaning without a statement. The style depends entirely on font choice: at 1 cm tall, the wrong typeface becomes a smudge within a few years, while the right one stays crisp for a decade.

Everything at micro scale comes down to ink spread. All tattoo ink migrates slightly under the skin over time, so thin strokes thicken and tight spaces fill in. The rules: choose fonts with simple, open letterforms — Poiret One, Julius Sans One and Bebas Neue are the workhorses. Keep letters at least 1 cm tall. Increase letter spacing slightly beyond what looks natural on screen. Avoid flourished scripts, tight gothic blackletter and anything with enclosed counters smaller than a pinhead.

Dotted and hairline display fonts like Raleway Dots look magical fresh but are the most fragile of all — expect touch-ups if you go that route.

Placement changes everything for small tattoos. The inner wrist is the kindest canvas — flat, low-friction, and it heals cleanly. Behind the ear works well for single short words in fine line styles. Fingers are the most treacherous: constant washing and friction mean finger tattoos blur and fade faster than anywhere else, so keep them bold, simple and short — initials, a small word, or a date — and accept that they may need refreshing over the years.
