Tattoo Number Fonts

Roman numerals are the most popular way to tattoo a date, and for good reason: they are elegant, symmetrical and slightly private — readable to you, decorative to everyone else. Fonts with classical capitals like Cinzel and Cormorant Garamond produce numerals that look carved rather than written, echoing the inscriptions on monuments and clock faces.

A quick reference: I, V, X, L, C, D and M are all you need. Double-check your conversion before the appointment — a wrong numeral is a permanent typo.

Arabic numerals (regular digits) suit a more direct, modern look — jersey numbers, area codes, years like 1994. Serif digit styles read as classic and composed; pair them with small caps lettering if you are combining numbers with a name. Keep the layout simple: a single line of digits on the wrist, forearm or collarbone is almost always stronger than an elaborate composition.

Numerals have tight interior spaces — the counters of 6, 8, 9 and 0 can fill in if the tattoo is too small. Keep digits at least 1.5 cm tall, favour open serif faces over ornate ones, and avoid ultra-thin numerals on high-friction areas like fingers. Roman numerals are naturally forgiving because they are mostly straight strokes, which is another reason artists love them.
